Breeding Program...

Having experimentally bred bush mimulus for many years, I have gradually developed a breeding theory and program. Here are some of the highlights.

  1. Use mainly natural species as breeding parents. Natural species produce consistent, predictable, vigorous results. OTOH, crosses involving commercial hybrids tend to be less consistent, or predictable. Many times commerical hybrids have been over-bred, so that crosses involving them are difficult or progeny are weak.
  2. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You won't get unexpected results unless there is a very rare mutation or fluke. Mainly, progeny display traits that were in their parents.
  3. Plant culture plays an important role in plant characteristics. Don't jump to conclusions about plant characteristics which may be the result of variation in culture or growing conditions.
  4. Seek out unusual parents for unusual results.
